Liberty, Legacy and Leadership: Innovation and Industry Insight at AAHOACON26

More than 5,300 attendees and nearly 500 exhibitors gathered in Philadelphia for AAHOACON26, where hotel owners, industry partners, educators, and future leaders came together under the theme Liberty, Legacy and Leadership. The annual convention once again showed why it remains one of hospitality’s most influential events.

This year’s conference balanced two important ideas: honoring the fundamentals that built the industry while embracing the innovation that will shape its future.

AAHOACON26

Back to Basics Still Matters

Across many member-focused sessions, a clear message emerged: growth starts with strong fundamentals. Owners and operators discussed the importance of service standards, operational discipline, guest relationships, sound financial practices, and long-term leadership.

In an industry moving quickly, attendees were reminded that technology works best when built on a strong foundation. The basics still matter. In many ways, they matter more than ever.

That connection between past and future gave real meaning to the convention theme. Legacy is not about standing still. It is about using proven principles to move forward with confidence.

AI and the Future of Revenue Management

One of the highlights for me was speaking at the Independent Hotelier Summit during the session, Beyond Traditional RevMan: How AI is Redefining Pricing and Demand.

The discussion explored how artificial intelligence is transforming revenue management, pricing strategy, and demand forecasting. Hotels now have access to tools that can analyze booking pace, market shifts, guest behavior, and competitive trends in real time.

L to R: Pedro Colaco, Shikha Talwar, Suzanne Bagnera, Frank Mulcahy, and Ashwin Kamlani

I joined an outstanding panel that included Pedro Colaco (Guestcentric), Frank Mulcahy (Mulcahy and Associates), and Ashwin Kamlani (Hyperfunnel), moderated by Shikha Talwar (Global Vision Hotels).

That perspective aligned with comments shared during the general session by Paul Brown, CEO of Inspire Brands, who described how centralized data, digital systems, and smarter operating models are helping businesses innovate faster and operate more efficiently. His message resonated far beyond restaurants. It was a reminder that scale, agility, and smart decision-making now define competitive advantage.

Students as the Future Leaders of Hospitality

One of the most rewarding parts of the convention was bringing two Florida International University students to participate in the Hotel Turnaround Collegiate Championship.

Powered by Russell Partnership Technology and coordinated with the support of Heidi Anaya, the competition challenged students to think like owners, analysts, and operators while solving real business problems under pressure. It gave participants the opportunity to apply classroom learning in a high-level industry setting.

The students were recognized on stage, a meaningful moment that reinforced the importance of developing future talent and creating pathways between education and industry.

As Ella Phillips of Kennesaw State University, a returning participant, shared:

“Attending AAHOAcon for three consecutive years as a student has been a pivotal hospitality perspective change for me. Each year I get to see the industry face new challenges and how the hoteliers of today are responding. As a young professional entering this industry I am truly excited for the future!”

Capturing the Voices of the Industry

AAHOACON26 also extended beyond the convention floor through media and storytelling. No Vacancy News served as the official podcast of AAHOACON.

As producer and co-host alongside Glenn Haussman, I had the opportunity to record on-site interviews with leaders and attendees throughout the event. Those conversations captured the energy, insights, and ideas that made this year’s conference so impactful.

Until 2027...

AAHOACON26 showed that hospitality’s future will not be built by choosing between tradition and innovation.

It will be built by leaders who respect the legacy of the industry, master the fundamentals, invest in future talent, and confidently embrace what comes next.
